How long should the brakes last?

It depends on how you ride and where. City riding will use a lot more pad than the highway. It is best just to look at the wear indicators on the pads and see. Basically when you get down to ~3mm you should deal with it.

How should the brakes be maintained?

Brakes can also use a cleaning periodically, even if the pads are still good, and also replacement of the fluid when it starts to become amber in colour. The maintenance schedule in your manual is the best guide.
